AB2246 & Developing Your Suicide Prevention Policy: What School Leaders Should Know

Is Your District Ready?

As a school psychologist, you could advise your school or school district on what to include in the district’s Suicide Prevention Policy, which is now mandated by state law. AB 2246, passed in 2016, states that school districts that serve grades 7-12 must have a suicide prevention policy in place by the start of the 2017-18 school year. The policy guidelines were released by CDE in May and offer an opportunity for school psychologists to ensure that school boards pass sound policies. Also, policies may call on school psychologists to train other staff members.
