Tips for Writing Your Legislator

  • Letters should be typed and on Letterhead
  • Letters should be addressed as follows:
    • The Honorable First and Last Name
    • California State Assembly/Senate
    • State Capitol Building
    • Sacramento, CA 95814
    • Re: Issue or Bill Number
    • Dear Assembly member/Senator Last Name:
  • Try to limit your letter to one specific subject.
  • Explain how the bill impacts the Legislator’s District/Constituents.
  • State your position and request a specific action.
  • Always thank your legislator for their time and consideration.
  • Send a copy of your letter and any reply to CASP.

Meeting With Your Legislator and/or Staff

Prior to the Visit:

  • Have a reason to visit your legislator.
  • Discuss with other colleagues and CASP staff.
  • Call or write for an appointment.

During the Visit:

  • Have confidence.
  • You do not have to go alone.
  • Clearly note the purpose of the visit.
  • Avoid insisting on a commitment before you leave.
  • Write a thank you letter to follow-up.
  • Rely on CASP staff to give you a helping hand.
