Tips for Writing Your Legislator
- Letters should be typed and on Letterhead
- Letters should be addressed as follows:
- The Honorable First and Last Name
- California State Assembly/Senate
- State Capitol Building
- Sacramento, CA 95814
- Re: Issue or Bill Number
- Dear Assembly member/Senator Last Name:
- Try to limit your letter to one specific subject.
- Explain how the bill impacts the Legislator’s District/Constituents.
- State your position and request a specific action.
- Always thank your legislator for their time and consideration.
- Send a copy of your letter and any reply to CASP.

Meeting With Your Legislator and/or Staff
Prior to the Visit:
- Have a reason to visit your legislator.
- Discuss with other colleagues and CASP staff.
- Call or write for an appointment.
During the Visit:
- Have confidence.
- You do not have to go alone.
- Clearly note the purpose of the visit.
- Avoid insisting on a commitment before you leave.
- Write a thank you letter to follow-up.
- Rely on CASP staff to give you a helping hand.
