Professional Development: Growing Counseling Skills

Introduction

According to the Every Child Succeeds Act, school psychologists are school-based mental health professionals, along with other Pupil Personnel Service (PPS) providers and clinical providers. School psychologists are trained to provide multifaceted mental health services to students and families in settings, such as:

  • Community-based day treatment or residential clinics and hospitals
  • Independent private practice, as a Licensed Educational Psychologists
  • Juvenile justice programs
  • Public schools
  • Charter schools
  • Private schools
  • Preschools
  • School-based health and mental health centers
  • School district administration offices
  • Universities

Possessing the scope of practice to provide mental health services, in theory, does not mean one can provide these services proficiently without ongoing training. Choosing professional development is essential to professional competence and reduced liability. It is crucial for school districts to support school psychologists’ involvement in professional development opportunities to grow their skills to deliver mental health services. The purpose of this document is to present a list of presenters/trainers who have completed a CASP survey on topics related to counseling in an educational setting.
