Child Abuse Prevention, Assessment, and Reporting

The purpose of this 7-hour workshop is to meet the needs of Licensed Educational Psychologists for the renewal of their licenses; and for instruction in best practices regarding the assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.

This workshop will include the study of the assessment and method of reporting of sexual assault, neglect, severe neglect, general neglect, willful cruelty or unjustifiable punishment, corporal punishment or injury, and abuse in out-of-home care. The training also includes physical and behavioral indicators of abuse, crisis counseling techniques, community resources, rights and responsibilities of reporting, consequences of failure to report, caring for a child’s needs after a report is made, sensitivity to previously abused children and adults, and implications and methods of treatment for children and adults.


Jeannine Topaline has been serving as a school psychologist for Los Angeles Unified School District for nearly 20 years. She is currently an administrator in Psychological Services in LAUSD and CASP President. Dr. Topalian has extensive knowledge of and experience in working with culturally diverse youth for over 20 years. Dr. Topalian works with the principal, school and support staff, parents, students, and community agencies to implement school-wide instructional, mental health services, and crisis and behavioral prevention and intervention programs. She also works specifically with students with special needs and is certified/licensed to assess, evaluate, and service students with behavior challenges, neurological disorders, intellectual delays, autism, emotional disturbance, specific learning disabilities, and other health impairments.

Leticia Zadrozny-Zelaya has ten years of experience as a bilingual school psychologist. She received her Masters and Education Specialist degree in School Psychology at the University of the Pacific. Leticia is a Licensed Educational Psychologist, as well as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. She currently works for a large district in the Bay Area. Leticia currently serves as the president of the Bay Area Association of school psychologist and chairs the CASP Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Issues Committee.


LMFTs/LCSWs/LPCCs/LEPs: This course meets the qualifications for 7 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs/LCSWs/LPCCs/LEPs licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. NCSPs: The course meets the qualifications for 7 hours of Continuing Professional Development for Nationally Certified School Psychologists, under Provider Number 1025, licensed by the National Association of School Psychologists. CASP is responsible for the content of this workshop.
